Sanssouci

Sanssouci Castle was built by Fredrick the Great and then expanded by his successors over a period of 100 years. The castle consists of twelve spacious, magnificently furnished rooms which still can be visited.

Park Sanssouci

There are Dutch, French and Sicilian gardens and on the other side of the Maulbeerallee, a dark, nordic garden. The southern part of the park was created in the style of an English landscape garden by Peter Josef Lenné in the 19th century.

Get to know the 18th and 19th centuries as you walk around the castles, for example the New Palais with more than 200 rooms, the Picture Gallery or the New Cambers, built as a guest house when the king realised, that Sanssouci Castle could not host all his visitors.
The influence of Italian architecture can be seen in the Friedenskirche, the Orangerie, the Roman baths and Schloss Charlottenhof. The Chinese influence is reflected in the Drachenhaus, a five-storey pagoda, and the Chinese Teahouse.

Get a glimpse of the history of Prussia and the state of Brandenburg when you visit the craftsmen at the pottery works, the glass blower at the Johann Knuckel glassworks, pewter makers, the court brewery, distillery and the royal bakery.
The royal bakery offers freshly baked specialities and the brewery serves seasonal Brandenburg dishes.

This historical important ensemble consists of the Pomona Temple built by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the Belvedere by the architects Ludwig Persius, Friedrich Stüler and Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse (based on plans by Frederick William IV) and the gardens created by Peter Joseph Lenné. All within easy access by foot from the castle.

Babelsberger Park

It was the summer residence of Kaiser William I. From Flatow Tower you will have a wonderful view of the entire park, Potsdam culture and the Havel landscape.

Russian Quarter Alexandrowka

Alexandrowka is the famous Russian Quarter in the north of Potsdam. It consists of 13 log houses, which were built from 1826 to 1827 according to the wishes of the Prussian King, Frederick III. more informationen >>

The quarter would become the new home for the Russian singers of the 1st Prussian guards regiment. The houses are surrounded by generously arranged gardens. The orthodox church ‚Alexander-Newski-Kirche’ was built for the Russian guests in the north of their area. 1999 the quarter was declared as UNESCO world cultural heritage. Enjoy Russian culture in the midst of Brandenburg by visiting the quarter and church, the museum and the Russian restaurant serving typical Russian dishes.

Holländisches Viertel

It consists of four blocks with about 150 red brick houses in Dutch style – unplastered, with white seams, window shutters and some with sweeping gables.

This ensemble of buildings is unique in Europe and was built from 1734 to 1742 for Dutch craftsmen, who had been invited to come to Potsdam by King Frederick William I, the Soldier King. Stroll through the quarter and discover the many exclusive shops, cosy cafés and restaurants, which add to the architecture in creating the special flair of this quarter.

At the memorial ‘Lindenstrasse 54’ a former state security prison, visitors can view the cell wing and the prison yard with exercise yards. The Bundesvermögensamt offers a permanent exhibition on the bridge ‘Glienicker Brücke’.

The Weavers’ Quarter consists of romantic weavers’ cottages and streets named Tuchmacher (Clothworker Street), more informationen >>

Garn (Yarn Street) and Spindel (Spindle Street) reminiscent of the old weavers’ colony Nowawes, which was built at the request of Frederick II after 1750 in what is now Babelsberg. Bohemian protestants, promised religious freedom and no taxation, settled here.
The Weberplatz square and connecting streets were once planted with mulberry trees for breeding silkworms. Nowadays the square hosts a flea market and farmers’ market at weekends.
